Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital

The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital is a specialist hospital in Southern Africa dedicated entirely to the care of sick children and children’s health. The Hospital is a public tertiary and secondary level referral hospital, which also provides critical training for medical professionals, and performs research into childhood diseases. Seriously ill patients from all over the continent are referred here for medical intervention from the dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to heal and cure. A third of the patients are under the age of one and sadly spend weeks or months in their hospital beds.

Since 1994, The Children’s Hospital Trust has been the independent fundraising arm, when the Hospital was threatened with closure due to a lack of funding. Since its inception, the Trust has supported the Hospital with upgrades to its buildings, the purchase of vital equipment and provision of funding for critical training and research programmes.

The Out-patient Burns Clinic

The RE/MAX Foundation, together with RE/MAX Broker/Owners, Managers, Sales Associates and Administrative personnel raised a total of R200,000 by January 2017 and donated it towards the upgrade and expansion of the existing Out-patient Burns Clinic at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

The original facilities were in dire need of an upgrade as it was old, worn and too small for the almost 150 patients that require attention daily. Up to 10 children required attention at a time and with three per examination bench. It was not only traumatic for the children but unhygienic and unsafe as well.

Their aim, since realised, was to create a more comfortable environment for the children who are going through a painful and scary process.

Parents Accommodation Upgrade

The existing facility, situated on the grounds of the Hospital, offers parents and caregivers the opportunity to be near their sick children. Due to the increase in demand, there was a critical need to increase the capacity and upgrade the out-dated facility to house more and more parents requiring a place to stay whilst their children are being treated. Daily parental support has proven to result in quicker recovery and shorter periods of stay for the young patients.

In May 2014, the RE/MAX Foundation donated R100,000 towards the upgrade.

The Breatheasy Tracheostomy & Ventilation Homecare Programme

Children with severe breathing difficulties require tracheostomies and/or permanent ventilation. This programme provides the patients with the essential tracheostomy and home ventilation equipment. The families are extensively trained to care for their children at home.

In February 2013, the RE/MAX Foundation donated R85,000 to procure a ventilator for a young boy, Yaqeen Siddiqi. Yaqeen unfortunately passed away, but his legacy lives on through the equipment that is still in circulation among patients receiving care at the facility.

Sporting Chance logo

Sporting Chance

The Sporting Chance Development Foundation is a registered Non Profit and Public Benefit Organisation. As sport breaks down the barriers of generations, cultures, race, gender and income levels, Sporting Chance was formed to use sport to positively impact the lives of children in South Africa. Today, Sporting Chance has grown to become one of the leading sports coaching and development organisations in South Africa.

Their goals and objectives are to provide opportunities for sporting achievement and personal development for as many children as possible as they are empowered to become competent, confident and responsible citizens of South African society.

Their mission is to provide the children of South Africa with a Sporting Chance.

One of their key objectives is to identify and nurture raw and natural talent. Once the talent is identified, these youth, from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, will be given the opportunity to pursue their sports dreams and reach their potential, based on a solid education foundation with optimal sports coaching and guidance.

Reach for a Dream logo

Reach for a Dream

Reach for a Dream fulfills the dreams of children between the ages of three and 18 who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. No child should live without hope and for these children, the magic of childhood may be lost in the emotional, physical and financial strain of dealing with their illness.

Reach for a Dream tries to alleviate some of this strain, which affects the whole family, by creating a different environment for the child – one that is not focused on his/her illness. We would like children to find their laughter again and herein find the strength to live beyond their illnesses.

RE/MAX of Southern Africa and the RE/MAX Foundation, together with all the Broker Owners, Sales Associates and Support Staff, have donated in excess of R7,000,000.00 to this organisation over the past eight years.
