Woodstock suburb

WOODSTOCK

Woodstock is one of the older, well established suburbs of Cape Town, and dates back to the days when the area was a farming village, in combination with the neighbouring Observatory, known as Papendorp. Its dilapidated old world charm made Woodstock a sort of catalyst for the inner-city revival which Cape Town has experienced.

Historically, Woodstock was one of very few suburbs to have escaped the effects of the draconian and oppressive effects of the notorious Group Areas Act which saw the forced removal of thousands of Capetonians from the city bowl area, purely based on the colour of their skin.  Woodstock has always retained its multicultural status and continues to exude the colourful and interesting character for which it has always been famous.

Set on the slopes of Devil’s Peak, with breathtaking views over the harbour and the CBD, Woodstock is – as is the case with many Cape Town suburbs – divided into two sections by the Main Road (which runs for over 40km, from Simonstown in the far south, to the city centre). Woodstock is a mere 1km from the city.  The ‘upper’ half, with its larger, graceful and meticulously refurbished Victorian semi-detached houses, and the ‘lower’ section, referred to as ‘Woodstock’ Proper, which was formerly associated with gangsterism, drugs and crime.

However, with the major revival came a major clean-up of the entire city and its environs, and one of the areas which benefitted the most is Woodstock. Its image underwent a drastic change and urban renewal has seen a number of once dilapidated warehouses and crumbling Victorian cottages restored and converted into trendy character spaces throughout the area.

This has awoken a huge interest among commercial and residential property investors, which in turn has dramatically driven up the demand for real estate – both residential and commercial – in Woodstock.
Young professionals are said to be snapping up the Victorian semis, in rare cases still managing to buy them at reasonable prices. And bargains in Woodstock are fast becoming extinct, as the popularity of the suburb continues to rise.

Woodstock offers the property investor real value for money, and excellent development opportunities, and these are resulting in more and more development and refurbishment taking place. Added to this is the development of a vibey, character-filled village type suburb, with trendy restaurants and pubs, as well as a host of other commercial ventures, which make Woodstock a truly appealing suburb in which to invest.

The lower section of Woodstock is also benefitting from these developments, as the formerly run-down industrial entities are also engaged in a clean-up, so as not to lag behind the general improvement of the entire Woodstock suburb.

The Main Road remains the commercial hub of Woodstock, with its many traditional streetfront shops still a major feature.  In addition to the several medical practices centred around Woodstock, it is home to the most famous hospital in the country, Groote Schuur Hospital. Educationally, Woodstock does not lack schools and educational facilities, and all the amenities which one would expect to find in a large and developed suburb, are to be found in Woodstock.

At one stage a disappointing waste of beautiful terrain with gorgeous views of both mountain and sea, Woodstock has re-emerged as a beautiful, vibrant suburb with endless potential and it is little wonder that it is now a real estate investor’s dream.
