Somerset West suburb

One of the prettiest areas to live in the Cape is Somerset West. This little town and its properties are only 40 kilometers along the N2 highway from central Cape Town. This means owning a property in Somerset West gives you the best of country living only twenty five minutes from the bright lights of the city.

Dutch soldiers founded a settlement in 1672. However, by the eighteen hundreds, the settlement had enough built-up properties to be called a small town and took the name of Somerset. It was named after Lord Charles Somerset the Governor of the Cape Colony. After 1825, property owners added the ‘West’ and the town was known as Somerset West.

This was a good location for a settlement to grow because it was close to the Lourens River (formerly called ‘Tweederivier’). It was when the Sir Lowrey’s Pass was built across the Helderberg Mountains in the eighteen thirties that Somerset West experienced noticeable growth in properties and commerce. It became easier to own a property due to easier access into and out of the town.

The first farm was called ‘Vergelegen’ its homestead was the first substantial property. It was built in the Cape Dutch style by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1700. This farm and homestead are currently owned by the Anglo-American Corporation and continues to produce fine Somerset West wines.

‘Vergelegen’ is fully restored and a perfect example of an original property exhibiting Cape Dutch architecture. The grounds of this grand Somerset West homestead are used by the public for leisurely summer picnics. ‘Vergelegen’ attracts owners of local properties and visitors from around the Cape.

Cape architecture is still loved in this area. Many modern properties are built in this style. Some even have roofs that are traditionally thatched. Other property owners opt for a simpler but still traditional style, in the form of a flat-roofed property, in the Cape Cottage style. It is the popular adherence to traditional architectural styles that give Somerset West its unique village appearance.

However, Somerset West also boasts other properties that were built over the generations. It is possible to find many examples of Victorian, art deco and modern styles. A property here could be a cottage, bungalow, house, town-house, semi-detached, double-storied, a flat or more. This is because Somerset West and its properties has prospered and grown accordingly.

A Somerset West property has always been a magnet for young families, retirees and more recently, singles. This well-maintained town falls within the municipality of the City of Cape Town. It has excellent amenities of the standard expected by discerning property seekers.

The town is so beautiful and so well-run it appeals to every age group. The properties of Somerset West are divided into twenty eight suburbs. Some are quieter and a property is more suited to retirees. While other properties are closer to the bustling town center and suited to singles. One very important property in the life of the townsfolk is the magnificent golf course. Golf is so popular that one course wasn’t enough and today there are three.

Golf, as well as other outdoor activities, is a big part of the Somerset West way of living. The ideal lifestyle is to have a comfortable property to live in and the great outdoors to play in. Its other close winemaking neighbors are Paarl, Wellington and Franschoek. They are about thirty five km away. The historic and manicured wine estates, smallholdings, rows of vines, orchards and farm stalls continue from Somerset West all the way to the properties of these famous Boland towns.
