Roodepoort suburb

ROODEPOORT

Roodepoort (“Red Valley”) is a major suburb of Johannesburg, situated on the West Rand and comprising several smaller suburbs which make up the greater Roodepoort. Although a municipality of the Johannesburg Metropole, Roodepoort earned ‘city’ status in 1977. The various residential areas within the new developing sections of Roodepoort are said to be among the fastest growing areas in South Africa. This growth is believed to be fueled by factors such as Roodepoort’s close proximity to other large Gauteng metropoles, its already established and advanced infrastructure, as well as the fast pace of growth of a new middle class.

Roodepoort has in the past few years witnessed large population growth due, in the main, to Johannesburg’s urban sprawl. It is one of the gateways to Johannesburg from the northern areas of South Africa, which makes it of high economic and logistical importance to Gauteng.

Roodepoort is home to Johannesburg’s most famous botanical gardens, named after struggle hero, the late Walter Sisulu (formerly the Witwatersrand National Botanical Gardens). It is a mix of residential suburbs, agricultural holdings, mining (in the south of Roodepoort) and a growing amount of commercial activity. Roodepoort has in its boundaries, suburbs such as Allen’s Nek, Fleurhof, Helderkruin, Florida, Wilgeheuwel and Little Falls.

The centre of Roodepoort is extremely busy, and boasts several historic buildings dating back to its founding in the late 1880s.  It offers a wide variety of restaurants, pubs and popular clubs, as well as some really impressive shopping malls, the most popular among them being Featherbrooke Village (in Ruimsig) - especially among the student population. Boulevard Shopping Centre and Westgate Mall are also very popular, busy shopping centres in Roodepoort and for a taste of Roodepoort’s buzzing nightlife, Town Square offers plenty to choose from.

Roodepoort offers excellent educational facilities, with a number of quality schools spread across the suburb, with an ever growing student population due to the presence of Monash University South Africa.

Roodepoort is certainly one of Johannesburg’s most attractive suburbs, with superb views of the city and its skyline, as well as the Magaliesburg. The highways and roads leading to and from Roodepoort are excellent, and its many wide open spaces and beautiful golf courses are evidence of the vastness of Roodepoort.

In addition to the fact that Roodepoort offers a wide spectrum of accommodation, ranging from apartments and student living to cluster homes, townhouse developments and even retirement villages to large villas and luxury homes, it is also home to some outstanding attractions.

In addition to the Walter Sisulu Gardens, there is also the Florida Lake, the Kloofendal Nature Reserve, the Roodepoort Country Club and the impressive new athletics stadium located in the Ruimsig area.

A really wonderful, self-contained city in its own right, Roodepoort certainly complements Johannesburg to a large extent.
