Paternoster, Britannia Bay, Shelley Point and St Helena Bay are all situated close to one another, along the ever popular West Coast of South Africa.

St Helena Bay was \"discovered\" by the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama in 1497, during his pioneer voyage from Europe to India. He named the bay after Saint Helena, a devout, influential Christian and mother of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great.

Today, St Helena Bay is one of South Africa’s principal fishing centres, and the villages of Paternoster, Britannia Bay and Shelley Point all form an important part of this ‘quartet’ of West Coast gems. Located only 150km from Cape Town, along the R27 Paternoster, Britannia Bay, Shelley Point and St Helena Bay are ideal holiday/getaway destinations, with the Shelley Point Golf Estate offering superb leisure and relaxation – be it on the fairways or in the luxury spa at the hotel.

The area offers limited medical facilities, however there is a private and a state hospital, as well as all the necessary emergency services, in the nearby town of Vredenburg, (15 minutes away). Vredenburg also has several doctors, dentists and other medical professional practices in the town.

Commercial activities, in particular shopping, are usually done in Vredenburg, which has most of the well-known shops, including a brand new shopping mall. There are supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and petrol stations which cater for the local population’s short term commercial requirements.

Educationally, the area has four dual-medium primary schools and pre-primary school facilities are also available. For high school education, residents would need to travel beyond the area.

Paternoster, Britannia Bay, Shelley Point and St Helena Bay offer mainly marine-related activities, in addition to the golf course (which is currently a 9 hole course, soon to be upgraded to an 18 hole course).
