OBSERVATORY
Observatory is situated at the foot of Devil’s Peak, and just a few kilometres away from the Cape Town CBD. Its history dates back to 1657 and records indicate that the founder of Cape Town, Jan van Riebeeck, had a farm in Observatory, called Malta Farm. Few would realise today that Observatory, once a marshy estuary formed by the Black and Salt Rivers was inhabited by buffalo, hippo, elephant, antelope and lions.
The name Observatory is derived from the fact that the suburb was the location of the first Royal Observatory, built in 1820. Known affectionately to locals as “Obz”, its proximity to the University of Cape Town and its world renowned medical school has made Observatory popular with both students and lecturers.
Hence Observatory’s widely recognised reputation as a student area. It offers much of the short term accommodation used by ever increasing numbers of foreign students attending UCT, (particularly North American and European).
Observatory has always been associated with a vibrant entertainment scene, and it has an abundance of restaurants. Observatory has traditional street front shopping, with the relatively small St Peter’s Square Mall, situated on the Main Road, below Groote Schuur Hospital, being its only mall. There are pubs aplenty in the area, and its many clubs offer a more alternative vibe with music ranging from rock and metal to reggae.
Property in Observatory is mixed, with homes ranging from Victorian style cottages, to (narrow) streets of semi-detached houses. There are guest houses and hostels scattered all around Observatory, with larger properties concentrated in the lower sections of the suburb, where there is more space. Observatory has always been somewhat of an alternative part of town, with New Age style shops and a very well attended monthly ‘Holistic Fair’.
Observatory’s location makes it easily accessible from all directions, and besides the Main Road, which extends into Cape Town on the one side and all the way to Simonstown in a southerly direction; it is also on the suburban Southern Railway Line which makes commuting really easy.
