Property in Newcastle

As the largest town in northern KwaZulu Natal, Newcastle is predominantly known for its affiliation with the Anglo-Boer War. Cultural fundi’s will revel in the multitude of battle sites located just beyond the town – tangible evidence of the region’s fascinating past.

The town was originally referred to as Post Halt Two, acting as a stopover location for those travelling from Port Natal to the Transvaal. Today, most people visit the town for its historical attractions, with nearby battle sites including Schuinshoogte and Laing’s Nek. Majuba is another popular site which has picnic and braai facilities available for those wishing to dine in a historic hot spot.

Ryder Haggard, the acclaimed author of King Solomon’s Mines, once occupied Hilldrop House, which now acts as a popular tourist draw-card for the area.  Another attraction is the Chelmsford Nature Reserve, which lies on the outskirts of the town. Here, one can partake in a number of water sports on the expansive dam, or simply sit and spot birdlife along its sloping banks.

The town is known for fostering various arts initiatives and tours may be arranged through the pottery and textile factories. A number of vibrant African artworks are also on display at The Carnegie Art Gallery. Both residential and industrial properties are on offer, catering for families and business professionals.
