MORNINGSIDE
Morningside is a large, grand old suburb, situated nearby the Berea and is spread from the lower end of the ridge overlooking Durban, to just above the Greyville Racecourse (venue of South Africa’s premier horse race, the legendary Durban July), which is located in Lower Morningside.
Morningside has, in recent years, experienced somewhat slower activity in the property market, especially with the rush by younger executives and investors to the newer developments further north along the Durban coast. However, there has been a marked rejuvenation of Morningside and interest in the area by serious property seekers is growing rapidly, with plenty money being poured into the suburb by developers and investors.
Morningside is home to some of Durban’s grand old homesteads where classic examples of large Edwardian and Victorian style homes with tin roofs and stately wide verandahs abound. Nowadays, several of these have been converted into office complexes, or have had to make way for the erecting of modern apartment blocks.
Morningside boasts several schools, as well as a selection of more than adequate shopping centres and is also not far from the large and popular Musgrave Shopping Mall. With Berea on the one side of Morningside, it is flanked on the other by the Umgeni River. Like many of Durban’s traditional suburbs, Morningside is an exclusive residential ‘garden’ suburb, with tree-lined streets and properties which offer excellent value for money. This is one of the chief reasons that Morningside ranks as one of Durban’s most popular suburbs.
Morningside’s accessibility to the centre of Durban as well as most of its attractions and of course its beaches, make it truly appealing. Its large sprawling parks, namely Mitchell and Jameson Parks, combined with its trendy streets and cosmopolitan look and feel, have attracted a vibey atmosphere to the nightlife around its pubs and restaurants, especially along Florida Road.
Morningside is a must-visit area when in Durban. It’s a great suburb with lots to offer, whether it be property you’re after, or just a good time in a great area.
