KLOOF
Kloof is a leafy middle to upper-class suburb in the Greater Durban area of KwaZulu-Natal. The area is named after the deep ravine formed by the Molweni Stream. The Kloof Gorge is part of the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve. The area now occupied by Kloof was formerly known as Richmond Farm, owned by the Field family, who gave their name to the famous Field’s Hill (on which the Richmond Farm was situated). Kloof was originally called Krantzkloof.
Kloof extends from the top of Field’s Hill and borders the suburbs of Gillitts and Hillcrest. These three suburbs form part of an area known as the Upper Highway Area, intersected as it is, by the M13 Highway. This intersection forms part of the route of the world famous Comrades Marathon, run annually between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
Kloof features several upmarket shopping centres such as the Delcairn Centre and the Village Mall, to name but a few. It is well equipped with all the necessary amenities and is home to no fewer than six excellent schools.
Properties in Kloof are usually very highly valued and most prime Kloof homes sell for between R2m and R3m. The larger villas and mansions range between R6m up to as much as R30m. Although Kloof is regarded as a mature and established suburb, residents and newcomers continue to build large houses where land is still available. These new developments are built in predominantly Tuscan, Tudorbethan and modern designs. Nowadays one will find most styles of architecture in the Kloof area.
Kloof is known as a mist belt with winding roads and tree surrounded estates and mansions. Private botanical gardens are now the gardens of the local Makaranga Lodge Hotel. There is plenty wildlife in the greenbelt of Kloof, an area which enjoys summer rainfall and dry, mild winters.
For the nature loving Kloof residents there are several hikes and trails in the area, whilst the Kloof Country Club offers the more sporty among its inhabitants an outstanding 18-hole golf course, tennis and squash courts, and a cricket oval.
Indeed a beautiful and top rated suburb, Kloof is one of the traditionally elite countryside areas of Durban, with tree-surrounded stately homes and mansions giving it a somewhat ‘Hollywood’ feel.
