Kenilworth suburb

KENILWORTH

Kenilworth is situated in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, between Wynberg (to the south) and Claremont (to the north) – at the foot of the south-eastern slopes of Table Mountain and less than 10km from the Cape Town CBD.

The name Kenilworth is taken from the town of the same name in England, and Kenilworth in many ways resembles its English counterpart, especially given its traditional colonial architecture and the fact that, historically, it is inhabited by English-speaking families whose ancestry dates back to the British Settlers who governed the Cape in the 1800s.

Kenilworth is a fairly large suburb, made up essentially of two halves, with the ‘upper’ half being the leafy, well established suburb with large and expensive properties and huge gardens, above the well-known Southern railway line (which extends from Cape Town to Simonstown) – and the ‘lower’ half being the suburb which still offers good value for money.

Kenilworth is extremely well located with easy access to all the major routes which lead to and from the city, as well as the excellent suburban railway service.

Kenilworth occupies a sizeable section of prime Cape Town land, which is sought after because of its excellent location, and popular because of its history, and of course the quality of property and accommodation on offer. Kenilworth, whilst being chiefly a residential area, also has areas zoned for business and its main road offers a generous helping of retail outlets and some reputable restaurants.

In addition to Kenilworth’s streetfront shopping, it boasts a large, well appointed shopping mall, aptly known as Kenilworth Centre but its proximity to shopping and business meccas Claremont and Wynberg, offers Kenilworth property dwellers an abundance of shopping options.

Housing in Kenilworth is mixed, with properties ranging from cottages to streets of semi-detached houses, countless townhouse complexes and a large selection of apartment blocks. Guest houses and bed and breakfast establishments can also be found throughout Kenilworth

Kenilworth’s close proximity to neighbouring suburbs Claremont, Wynberg and Rondebosch means that the suburb is served by a number of Cape Town’s finest schools. It is also situated a short distance from the University of Cape Town.

All the amenities standard to any well established suburb are to be found in Kenilworth, and easily its largest claim to fame is the annual J&B Met horserace – the oldest horserace in the country – which attracts massive crowds and is one of the most exclusive dates on Cape Town’s social calendar. This is run at the major racecourse in Cape Town, namely Kenilworth Racecourse.

A lovely suburb with plenty to offer the real estate investor and property dweller; Kenilworth reflects the diversity of Cape Town and its people, and is certainly a suburb with great character and beauty.
