Kempton Park suburb

KEMPTON PARK

Kempton Park is a city on the East Rand of Gauteng, and not far to the north east of Johannesburg. In fact, Kempton Park lies an almost equal distance between two of South Africa’s major metropoles with Pretoria situated some 30 kilometres to the north.  Kempton Park is named after the town of Kempten in Bavaria, the home of its founder, one Karl Wolff, who founded it just over a century ago.

The largest and busiest airport in Africa, the world renowned OR Tambo Airport, is located in Kempton Park, and this is probably the reason why there is a massive amount of airline-related staff resident in Kempton Park and its surrounds.

Kempton Park by its very nature is one of the older, more established suburbs of Johannesburg, and it is well served with all the necessary amenities, including several schools, commercial enterprises and medical facilities – including a major private hospital.
Kempton Park, referred to locally merely as “Kempton”, is situated close to one of Gauteng’s major industrial areas, namely Isando, and it is therefore not surprising that the area plays such a major role in the commercial and industrial activities of the region. Kempton is regarded as a primarily middle class suburb, rather quaint and well appointed, with an array of different types of dwellings for the property investor.

Property in Kempton Park ranges from established, spacious old blocks of flats to secured villages and townhouses on the one hand, and large classic houses with extensive gardens. In close proximity to Kempton Park are several large shopping malls and centres, the most notable being the well-known Eastgate Mall (with its myriad of shops, boutiques, restaurants and cinemas). Close by too is Emperors Palace Hotel and Casino, as well as a vast number of other quality hotels, located in the area due to the close proximity of the OR Tambo Airport. Naturally there are a myriad of smaller shopping centres and other commercial enterprises in Kempton, not to mention the head offices of several airlines, mainly due to its convenient closeness to the airport.

Kempton Park is home to several good schools, and offers a wide selection of sports facilities, ranging from golf courses to swimming pools, bowling and tennis clubs and even the home ground of the Valke (Falcons) Rugby Union.

As with all the major suburbs, Kempton Park has its own (Ekurhuleni) municipality, with all the amenities which are common to a suburb with city status.
