Loosely translated from Afrikaans to English, Hartbeespoort translates to “gateway of the hartbees” – the hartbees being a species of antelope found in Africa. The town was previously known as Schoemansville, named so after General Hendrik Schoeman who was a Boer General during the Anglo-Boer War.
