GRASSY PARK
The suburb of Grassy Park was established in the 1960s, then an area where people of colour were relocated to under the former government’s policy of racial segregation. It is situated in the southern part of the Cape Peninsula, close to the well-known wetlands of Princess Vlei, and the suburbs of Retreat and Diep River. Also close by is the world renowned Rondevlei, with its famous bird sanctuary, and also the only place in Cape Town where you can view hippos in “the wild”. Forming the southern boundary of Grassy Park is the recreational area of Zeekoevlei – a popular lake area for picnicking, boating and hiking.
Grassy Park is very well located in terms of access, with the M5 freeway (a major highway leading to the city centre), forming its western border. This freeway, known as Prince George Drive, also offers easy access to the popular suburbs of Wynberg and Claremont to the north, and Muizenberg to the south. Grassy Park also benefits from a good public transport network, which includes the public bus service, the taxi network as well as being situated close to the metrorail facility.
Property in Grassy Park offers great value for money, at excellent prices for the prospective buyer. The real estate found in Grassy Park comprises mainly freestanding houses which make up 90% of the property market. These stands are usually large and spacious, with a typical Grassy Park property being around 500m². Houses vary in size between 120 and 200m². The other 10% of real estate in Grassy Park is made up of flats and townhouses.
Grassy Park can be classified as a middle-income suburb, and is home to many professionals and business people. The well known Cafda Community Centre – a proudly South African Arts and Crafts centre created by the locals, for the locals – is situated in Grassy Park. The popular Muizenberg and Strandfontein beaches are a mere 10 minute drive from Grassy Park, with the Tokai Forest (a national park) also not more than 15 minutes away.
Grassy Park is well served municipally, with all the necessary amenities and a wide selection of schools in the area. There are also several well-known schools in the southern suburbs, not far from Grassy Park, to which scholars from the area have easy access. Although not too far from some of Cape Town’s major hospitals, Grassy Park does have its own Day Hospital, Community Health Clinics and several doctors and dentist practices and pharmacies.
There are plenty retail businesses scattered all around Grassy Park, with many food stores and convenience stores serving the residents of the area. In addition, Grassy Park is located in close proximity to many of the large and well-known major shopping malls which are located in the southern suburbs of Cape Town.
The suburb of Grassy Park has an impressive array of sports facilities which offer excellent recreational opportunities to its residents. These include community sports centres, cricket and soccer clubs and fields, swimming facilities, and even golf, rowing and baseball, as well as several more to choose from.
When one considers the circumstances which led to the creation of Grassy Park, it is indeed a credit to the generations of Capetonians that made the area their home, that they have built it into such a vibrant and functional suburb, where real estate is valuable and sought after, and where the investor and/or property dweller is pleased to call home.
