GONUBIE
Gonubie, which lies about 8km north east of the heart of East London, gets its name from a thorny bramble which bears a juicy sweet berry, so named by the Xhosa inhabitants of the area.
Well-known for its Blue Flag Beach, Gonubie’s famous boardwalk runs along the entire Main Beach. Over the years local farmers have built holiday shacks at the river mouth and Gonubie’s potential as a seaside resort was realized. In 1933 property moguls in Gonubie began selling plots and the tiny settlement began to grow rapidly resulting in Gonubie’s ever growing permanent resident number.
In keeping with its seaside resort status, Gonubie offers a wide array of watersports, from sailing and surfing to fishing. Other regular sports are also all well catered for, and these include the popular Strandloper hiking trail. Gonubie has all the necessary amenities, including its own primary and high schools.
