Glenwood suburb

GLENWOOD

Across the great gaping divide which is Berea Road, lies Glenwood – one of Durban’s oldest and grandest suburbs, with its colonial-style mansions in the upper reaches near the University, to the lower-income Umbilo Road region, an area that has in modern times become popular because of its proximity to Durban’s CBD.

Like many suburbs throughout South Africa, Glenwood is now in the era of suburban revival, due in the main to the bustling activity of sections such as Davenport, Bulwer and Ferguson roads. The restoration of old Victorian style houses into trendy restaurants, boutiques antique shops and galleries, compare most favourably with their major South African contemporaries such as Melville (in Johannesburg) and Oranjezicht (in Cape Town). It is this restoration that has brought the Glenwood property market ‘back to life’, as it were.

For all this, Glenwood has a neighbourly vibe and its peaceful-looking houses in tree-lined streets with ready access to the city centre make it a very popular place to live in.

Whilst free of the bustling hive of activity which is the beachfront, the distinctly trendy vibe of Glenwood makes it an ideally convenient venue of choice for business visitors to the city and its abundance of well-priced, comfortable guest houses offer excellent value for money for business people as well as tourists.

Being the relatively compact city that Durban is, most places and things to do and see here are easily reachable. Glenwood is a short ride from all the major attractions that Durban has to offer, whether it be to the famous beachfront and the Suncoast Casino, or a trip to the beautiful Umhlanga area north of the city – or even to a sporting event at the sporting precinct which features the stunning Moses Mabhida Stadium (a host venue of the 2010 Soccer World Cup).

With its wide range of accommodation on offer, from guesthouses and B&B’s, to luxurious old colonial mansions, spacious contemporary houses, apartments and townhouse complexes, there is something to suit all tastes. Glenwood is a property investor’s dream.
