GILLITTS

Gillitts is situated approximately 35km from the Durban city centre, and despite Durban’s humidity, Gillitts seems to avoid it due largely to its altitude of 600m above sea level. Gillitts is located very close to the suburbs of Kloof and Hillcrest, and forms part of an area known as the Upper Highway Area, intersected as it is, by the M13 Highway. Amid the rapid growth of neighbours Kloof and Hillcrest, Gillitts has tended to show a more steady growth.

It  originated as a large farm which has, over time, been sold off, with only the century old original farmhouse still remaining, forming part of the Gillitts Driving Range and 9-hole Mashie Golf Course. Gillitts has in its midst the Iphiti Nature Reserve – a 15ha stand of indigenous forest, wetland and grassland, home to several species of birds and small mammals.  The walks and benches in the park are very popular with the locals, and are quite heavily used over weekends.

Plot sizes in the Gillitts area are predominantly very large (usually a minimum of half-an-acre), there are very few cluster developments, and at this stage minimal commercial or industrial development, which make this a nature lover’s paradise.

Inside Gillitts however, is a developed residential area known as Gillitts Park, which comprises the northern half of the suburb of Gillitts and is a green belt residential area consisting of some 900 homes. There are a further 200 units making up a cluster development, with the most prominent being the Augusta Golf Estate.

Commercial property in this suburb is limited. Gillitts residents seem to prefer to keep their suburb this way, preferring to make use of the commercial development and amenities offered by Kloof and Hillcrest. Schools, hospitals and shopping malls are plentiful in these neighbouring areas, and Durban and surrounds are a mere 25 minute drive away.

Gillitts is indeed a beautiful, unspoilt piece of paradise and certainly an area well worth considering if outdoor and nature living is your cup of tea.
