Property in Fochville
Just 40km beyond Potchefstroom, the sweeping R500 highway takes a turn south to the town of Fochville, a quaint farming and mining town in the Gauteng Province that entertains a colourful history and a blossoming future.
Visitors can find Fochville nestled on the southern perimeter of a gleaning cluster of golf mines, including but not limited to the famous Western Deep Levels which is known as the deepest mine in South Africa. Because of the town’s preoccupation with mining, you’ll find that many Fochville residents have a connection in some way or another to one of the many historical mines.
If any town populating the historically rich Gauteng Province has a great story to tell – it’s Fochville. Fochville, which was formally declared a town on 15 November 1920, was laid out during the First World War by two brothers on portions of the farms named Kraalkop (‘Corral Hill’) and Leeuwspruit (‘Lion’s Creek’).
Named after the Word War 1 commander-in-chief of the allied forces in France, Ferdinand Foch, the town and surrounds feature a number of ancient Sotho and Tswana ruins as well as the site where Boer War hero, Danie Theron, was killed. The Theron Memorial is set 8km west of the town. Another historical attraction worth visiting is The Borehole – a site where in the early mining days the Western Deep Levels mines struck a steam of sulphurous water; a stream which to this day gushes out of the borehole with gusto.
Fochville features a charming residential area where homeowners enjoy the peace of the region. Properties range from quaint cottages and smallholdings to modern apartments and flashy upmarket houses. Fochville provides an ideal location for families looking to settle down as the town features two great primary schools and a high school.
The town centre bustles with activity and happy locals sharing stories, doing their weekly shopping or dining out at quaint restaurants. The Piet Viljoen Park near the town centre features perfect picnic spots for lazy Sunday afternoons and wide open spaces for dog owners to take their pups out for a walk. Also popular is the local Bird Farm and fascinating Trout Hatchery.
