BEREA
Berea the suburb is located on ‘The Berea’, which is a ridge above the city of Durban, on the northern side, overlooking the city centre and the Indian Ocean.
Berea was once a densely forested area and is home to some of Durban’s oldest mansions. Nowadays, many of these mansions have been converted into office complexes or have had to make way for the erecting of modern apartment blocks. Once the most expensive real estate in Durban, Berea still appeals to property investors and remains a highly sought after suburb. The two main areas that make up Berea are Musgrave and Upper Glenwood, separated only by the N3 highway which leads into the city. It also borders the suburb of Morningside.
Berea is home to some select schools, as well as a selection of popular shopping malls, most notably Musgrave Shopping Centre. Berea is home also to the Botanical Gardens of Durban as well as one of the campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Berea is an exclusive residential ‘garden’ suburb, with tree-lined streets and a mix of architectural property styles ranging from Victorian and Edwardian, to art deco and modern. Beautiful homes abound wherever you look and many offer unsurpassable views of the sea and the city.
The city centre is easily reachable, whether walking or driving and Berea is known for its sidewalk cafes and its diverse mix of African, Indian and European cultures. Easily the most fashionable and indeed very famous Florida Road, leads off the Berea ridge, and is a mecca of art galleries, fashion boutiques and highly popular restaurants and clubs.
Truly a world within a world, Berea is a must-see area when visiting Durban. It is fashionable without being overstated, stately without appearing colonial and eccentric whilst still being grounded. All in all, it’s a place with a heart that beats.
