BEDFORDVIEW

Bedfordview is one of the older, more established suburbs of Johannesburg, dating back as far as the 19th century when settlers arrived there and set up camp. It began as a farm, known then as Elandsfontein, which was later sold for its mineral rights and divided into smaller farms and small holdings, including Bedford Farm, which was located in what is today known as St Andrews.

During the Anglo-Boer War, the British Cavalry was based in Bedfordview, and they were reportedly responsible for planting the oak trees which are a feature in many of the streets of the suburb to this day. Bedfordview is home to some prime real estate, with stately homes from yesteryear a feature of the area.

Several smaller suburbs such as Bedford Gardens, Bedford Park, Morning Hill and St Andrews, among others, make up the Greater Bedfordview. Apart from Edenvale, the garden suburb of Bedfordview is one of the closest suburbs to the OR Tambo International Airport, which makes it an ideal location for travellers arriving in Johannesburg for a brief visit.

Bedfordview is a quiet, leafy and relaxed upmarket suburb, a short distance east of Johannesburg, and it offers its residents beautiful park-like living, with its lovely tree-lined streets and avenues, lush gardens and prolific birdlife.
