ATHLONE
The suburb of Athlone, named after the first Earl of Athlone who was Governor-General of South Africa from 1924 to 1930, is a suburb of rich cultural heritage and tradition. Athlone has, over the years, become known as a predominantly Muslim area, with a well developed commercial centre and a community of entrepreneurs and professional people from all walks of life. The suburb of Athlone has spawned several satellite suburbs, among them areas such as Gatesville, Belgravia, Bridgetown, Crawford and Hazendal to name a few.
Athlone is home to several of Cape Town’s major Mosques and Temples, and it is also a haven for some of the finest purveyors of Eastern cuisine in Cape Town. Athlone, and its many satellites are strewn with a myriad of artisan-based businesses and top quality dressmakers and tailors. The area is also rich in professional people, with many doctors, dentists, lawyers and University lecturers and professors residing in Athlone.
