Property in Amanzimtoti
With the warm Indian Ocean lapping against its shore, Amanzimtoti has a reputation as popular tourist destination, situated to the south of Durban’s centre. The region is perhaps best known for its water sports, including snorkelling, swimming, surfing and diving.
The area of Amanzimtoti has a fascinating past linked to the famous warrior and leader, King Shaka Zulu. Legend has it that the Zulu King stopped to rest in the area while on one of his campaigns. He drank from a calabash filled with water from a nearby river and exclaimed, ‘Kanti Amanz’amtoti’ which translates to, ‘the water is sweet.’ Thus, Amanzimtoti found its name.
With the warm ocean hosting an incredible diversity of marine life, it’s no wonder the region has become a diving hot spot. The annual Sardine Run occurs from June to August, attracting a wealth of people to the area. This phenomenon has been repeatedly referred to as the ‘greatest shoal on earth,’ with billions of sparkling sardines migrating and forming enormous bait balls, attracting myriad predators including various species of dolphins and sharks.
Bird lovers should head to the Amazimtoti Bird Sanctuary, which includes a large lake, verdant gardens and dense forests. Stroll through the forestry and keep an eye out for various birds secreted in the branches – there are over 150 avian species within the reserve, including the Giant Kingfisher and Greenback Heron. There are various other reserves in the vicinity and its immediate surrounds, including the Illovo Lagoon Nature Reserve and Illanda Wilds Nature Reserve.
Every year, the Umgababa Beach Festival attracts numerous families to the area, in search of a fun day out at the beach. A host of activities are on offer such as volleyball, soccer and the learn-to-swim campaign, as well as various entertainment options including musical and dance performances and the Miss Umgababa Pageant.
Property in the area includes residential real estate, such as townhouses, flats and family homes, many of which offer supreme sea views.
